1. Know Your Enemy: The 3 Types of Clogging
To prevent a blockage, you first need to know what is causing it. Clogging generally falls into three categories:
Physical Clogging (Sand & Debris):
This is the most common issue. Sand, silt, and organic matter suspended in the water source (especially from ponds or rivers) get trapped in the tiny emitter pathways.
Chemical Clogging (Scale & Minerals):
If you use hard groundwater (high in calcium, magnesium, or iron), these dissolved minerals can precipitate out of the water as temperature or pressure changes, forming a hard "crust" over the emitters. Improper fertigation (mixing incompatible fertilizers) also causes chemical sludge.
Biological Clogging (Algae & Slime):
Warm spring weather combined with standing water inside the black tubes creates a perfect breeding ground for algae and iron bacteria. These organisms secrete a sticky slime that plugs the holes.
2. The First Line of Defense: Proper Filtration
You cannot run a successful drip irrigation system without a reliable filter. According to agricultural irrigation experts, installing the correct filter is the most critical step in preventing physical clogging.
Screen Filters vs. Disc Filters:
For clean well water, a standard Screen Filter (usually 120 to 150 mesh) is sufficient to catch sand. However, if you draw water from a pond or stream containing organic matter (algae), a Disc Filter is highly recommended. Disc filters offer three-dimensional depth filtration, trapping organic slime much more effectively.
Maintenance:
A filter only works if it's clean. During the peak spring season, check and backwash your main filters weekly.
