How to Choose the Right Drip Tape?

Drip irrigation is the gold standard for modern agriculture, saving up to 50% of water compared to flood irrigation. But when you look at a catalog, the specifications can be overwhelming.

"Should I buy 6 mil or 16 mil?"

"Do I need 10cm spacing or 30cm?"

Choosing the wrong spec means either wasting money on "overkill" durability or facing burst pipes in the middle of the season.

At Pandora, we manufacture high-quality drip tape using 100% Virgin Polyethylene. Here is our expert guide to matching the right tape to your crop.

1. Understanding Thickness: What is a "Mil"?

The most common confusion is the unit "Mil".

Note: 1 Mil is NOT 1 millimeter. It is 1/1000th of an inch (approx. 0.0254 mm). The higher the number, the thicker and more durable the tape.

Thin Wall (5 mil - 8 mil): The "Single Season" Choice

  • Best For: Short-term crops like strawberries, lettuce, melons, and onions.
  • Lifespan: Designed for one season only. It is cost-effective and usually discarded or recycled after harvest.
  • Soil: Use on well-tilled soil with few rocks to avoid punctures.

Medium Wall (10 mil - 12 mil): The "Resistant" Choice

  • Best For: Crops with longer growing cycles or slightly rocky soil.
  • Lifespan: Can sometimes be reused for a second season if handled carefully.

Thick Wall (15 mil - 25 mil): The "Multi-Season" Choice

  • Best For: Permanent crops like vineyards, orchards, or rocky terrain.
  • Lifespan: Designed to last 3-5 years. It resists insect damage and heavy mechanical stress.

Pandora Tip: For most commercial vegetable growers, 8 mil is the global industry standard for the best balance of cost and durability.

2. Choosing Emitter Spacing: Watch Your Roots

Spacing refers to the distance between the water outlets (drippers). You should choose this based on how close your plants are to each other.

Close Spacing (10cm - 20cm):

  • Crops: High-density crops like Onions, Garlic, Carrots, Leafy Greens.
  • Soil: Essential for Sandy Soil. (In sand, water sinks straight down. Close spacing creates a continuous "wet strip" to ensure roots get water).

Standard Spacing (30cm / 12 inch):

  • Crops: Tomatoes, Peppers, Corn, Potatoes, Strawberries.
  • Why: This is the most versatile spacing, matching the typical planting distance of many vegetables.

Wide Spacing (40cm - 60cm+):

  • Crops: Vine crops (Watermelon, Pumpkin) or young trees.
  • Benefit: Saves water by not wetting the dry soil between widely spaced plants.

3. Flow Rate: Soil Absorption Matters

How fast should the water come out?

  • Low Flow: Best for Clay Soil. Clay absorbs water slowly. If you use high flow, the water will run off (puddle) instead of sinking in.
  • High Flow: Best for Sandy Soil. You need to deliver water quickly before it drains away too deep.
